CWN Editor's Note: If Pope Benedict XVI imposed verbal sanctions on former cardinal Theodore McCarrick—as reported by Archbishop Vigano—the action would not have been unprecedented, the Crux web site has found. Crux notes that similar sanctions—backed by “moral suasion” but not made public—were imposed on at least three other prominent clerics: Father Marcial Maciel, the founder of the Legion of Christ; retired Bishop Joseph Hart of Cheyenne, Wyoming; and Melkite Archbishop Isidore Battikha, formerly of Homs, Syria.

The above note supplements, highlights, or corrects details in the original source (link above). About CWN news coverage.
