Maryknoll priest faces disciplinary action over role in Womenpriests’ ceremony
August 18, 2008
Father Roy Bourgeois, A Maryknoll priest with a long history of radical activism, participated in an "ordination" ceremony organized at a Unitarian church by "Roman Catholic Womanpriests."
"In conscience I felt I had to be there," he said.
That was in August, several weeks after the Vatican issued a decree announcing the excommunication of Catholics who actively participate in such a ceremony. Father Bourgeois was unquestionably an active participant: he concelebrated the liturgy, delivered the homily, and simulated the sacrament of Holy Orders by placing his hands on the head of a woman who wished to become a priest.
Leaders of the Maryknoll order meet with Father Bourgeois today. CNS says that they will "discuss" the matter. But really, what is there to discuss?
