Colombian priest charges clerical homosexuality is widespread

August 10, 2009

A priest in Colombia has awakened a controversy in that country with a provocative book entitled Toward a Gay Clergy. In an interview with the weekly Semana (translated on the Rorate Caeli site), Father German Robledo charges that 30% of the clergy of the Cali archdiocese-- where he once headed the archdiocesan tribunal-- are homosexual. He adds that although he provided a detailed report on the problem to Archbishop Juan Francisco Sarasti Jaramillo, nothing was done to correct it. He argues that "in the past 30 years, the Church has leaned toward priests with profiles with effeminate traces, sweet, obedient, submissive, uncritical, and who always accept the authoritarian role of the bishop and of the other superiors."
