CWN Editor's Note: As the Church celebrated the new feast of Mary, Mother of the Church, in May 21, Pope Francis said in his homily at Mass that “the Church is feminine,” reflecting the motherhood of the Virgin. When the Church is not recognized as a mother, the Pope went on, it can come to be perceived as something like “a charitable organization, or a football team.” In that case, he said, the Church becomes a group of “old bachelors.”
