CWN Editor's Note: Pope Francis appointed Elaine Fuchs, a leading American cellular biologist, as a member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. The academy, founded in 1936, is an advisory body whose members include non-Catholics; Fuchs’s research has centered on skin stem cells, whose uses (unlike embryonic stem cells) is morally licit ( background).
