Australian premier will lobby Pope to schedule quick canonization of Mary MacKillop
June 30, 2009
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has promised that he will urge quick action on the canonization cause of Mary MacKillop (1842- 1909), an Australian nun who was beatified in 1995, when he meets with Pope Benedict XVI next week. Rudd, who is an Anglican, believes that the canonization of Blessed Mary MacKillop would be a boost for all Australia. His intervention in the case, while friendly, is likely to be rebuffed by the Vatican, which recently issued a stern reminder that the Pope should not be subjected to outside influences in the cause of Pope Pius XII. The approval of a miracle attributed to the Australian nun's intercession would fulfill the requirements for her canonization.
