Bridgeport diocese defends handling of abuse cases, weighs appeal of court decision opening records

The Diocese of Bridgeport, Connecticut, is reviewing its legal options in light of a court decision that could lead to the public disclosure of thousands of documents related to the handling of sex-abuse cases. The diocese could appeal the decision by the state's highest court. Groups representing abuse victims have urged Bishop William Lori not to pursue an appeal. In a statement responding to critics, the diocese said that many steps had been taken during the past decade to safeguard children from abuse.
