3rd Advent Sermon: ‘the sober intoxication of the Spirit’

December 16, 2016

Father Raniero Cantalamessa, the preacher of the pontifical household, spoke about “the sober intoxication of the Spirit’ in his Advent Sermon on December 16.

Preaching the third in a weekly series of sermons, Father Cantalamessa said the effect of spiritual “intoxication” is the opposite of drunkenness, since it raises the intellect to a level above the ordinary use of reason. The faithful need that extra insight today, he said, at a time when the world’s skepticism and secularism act against the faith:

The world has become so averse to the gospel, so sure of itself, that only the “strong wine” of the Spirit can overcome its unbelief and draw it out of its entirely human and rationalistic sobriety, which passes itself off as “scientific objectivity.”

The papal preacher spoke about the importance of spiritual combat, using the weaspons of the Spirit to “destroy strongholds.”
