Mexican cardinal retires

November 07, 2016

Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Cardinal Alberto Suárez Inda of Morelia, Mexico, for reasons of age and has named Archbishop Carlos Garfias Merlos of Acapulco as his replacement.

Cardinal Suárez Inda, 77, was the first archbishop of Morelia, the capital of the troubled western Mexican state of Michoacán, to be named a cardinal.

Archbishop Garfias Merlos, 65, was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Morelia. He served as bishop of two smaller dioceses before Pope Benedict appointed him archbishop of Acapulco in 2010.
