Mexico: suspect arrested for September killing of two priests

October 18, 2016

Mexican police have arrested a suspect in connection with the September murder of two Catholic priests.

Fathers Alejo Nabor Jimenez and Alfredo Suarez de la Cruz were shot and killed, their bodies were discovered on September 19 outside the town of Poza Rica. Prosecutors have said that the two priests knew the men who abducted them, and were drinking with then just before they were shot. Church officials have blasted that claim, saying that the police were smearing the murder victims.

The prosecutors’ previous public statements implied that more than one person was involved in the priests’ deaths. Only one suspect has been arrested, however. Police reported that he was taken into custody last week after allegedly engaging in another violent crime.
