Bishop Nuno Bras da Silva Martins, an auxiliary of the Lisbon patriarchate, reported that he had spoken briefly with the Holy Father on October 3, and mentioned that people in Portugal were expecting him to visit. “I shall go,” the Pontiff replied, “but to Fatima”—indicating that his trip would be only a visit to the shrine, not a longer stay in Portugal.
