“Patriotism yes, we love our homeland, but any form of nationalism must be opposed,” said the president of the German Bishops’ Conference on September 27, as he emphasized that the Church will not participate in a “defensive, restorative, neo-romantic idea.”
Cardinal Marx said that important components of a refugee policy include humane treatment, a fair trial in asylum hearings, and a refusal to send refugees back to situations of war.
The prelate added that the concerns of poor nations should be placed at the center of trade negotiations.
