Axe-wielding Islamic radical attacks Indonesian priest during Mass
August 29, 2016
A teenage Islamic radical attacked an Indonesian Catholic priest with an axe during Mass on August 28.
Witnesses report that the assailant rushed at the altar carrying a backpack that contained an explosive device. When the bomb did not explode, he struck at the priest, Father Albert Pandingan, with an axe. Fortunately the priest suffered only minor injuries.
Members of the congregation then wrestled the man to the floor, and police placed him under arrest. The attack took place in Medan, in northern Sumatra.
Police in Medan report that the young attacker, Ivan Armadi Hasugian, was inspired by the murderous assault on Father Jacques Hamel in France, and "tried to do the same thing here."
