Schedule released for papal trip to Georgia, Azerbaijan

July 11, 2016

The Vatican has released the full schedule for a trip by Pope Francis to Georgia and Azerbaijan, from September 30 to October 2.

The Pope will leave Rome in the morning on Friday, September 30, and arrive in Tbilisi, Georgia, that afternoon. After a welcoming ceremony and a courtesy visit at the presidential palace, he will meet with Orthodox Patriarch Ilia II, then finish his day by meeting with Chaldean Catholics.

On Saturday, October 1, the Pope will celebrate an outdoor Mass. The day will also include meetings with priests, religious, and charity workers.

On Sunday, October 2, the Pope will fly to Baku, Azerbaijan, where he will celebrate Mass at a Salesian center. Again the visit will include a welcoming ceremony and a meeting with the country's president. He will then meet with Muslim, Jewish, and Orthodox leaders. He is due to leave Azerbaijan in the early evening, arriving back in Rome that same night.
