Brazilian cardinal nearly caught in gun battle between police and criminals

June 13, 2016

Cardinal Orani Joao Tempesta of Rio de Janeiro was forced to take cover behind his car on June 10 when he was caught in an exchange of gunfire between gangsters and police.

Global Pulse magazine notes that the incident was the 3rd time in recent months that the Brazilian cardinal was involved with criminal violence. In June 2015 his car was stolen; in September 2014 he was the victim of an armed robbery.

Cardinal Tempesta was not the target of last Friday's incident. He was in his car, headed for the airport, when gunfire broke out. His drivers stopped the car and urged the prelate to take cover.
