Cardinal Pell will turn 75, submit resignation, on June 8
June 07, 2016
Cardinal George Pell, the prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy, will celebrate his 75th birthday on June 8, and in accordance with canon law will submit his resignation to Pope Francis.
The Pope is not expected to act on the resignation of the Australian cardinal, who has not completed his term as the first head of the new Vatican secretariat. Cardinal Pell has sometimes faced heavy opposition in his drive to bring accountability to Vatican financial affairs, but has assured supporters that he enjoys the Pope's full confidence.
