Imitate courage of St. Thomas a Becket, Cardinal Nichols encourages priests
June 03, 2016
England's leading Catholic prelate exhorted clerics to imitate the courage of St. Thomas a Beckett during a homily for the Jubilee of Priests.
Cardinal Vincent Nichols said that St. Thomas stands as an inspiration to all priests because of his willingness to defy a powerful king in order to serve the faith. "Thomas knew when compromise was no longer an acceptable path," the cardinal remarked.
"For us the risks are less dramatic," the cardinal continued. "They creep up on as as we slowly compromise and lose our distinctive identity and with it some of the edge, the power, of the witness we are to give."
Cardinal Nichols said that it is a sign of danger when priests complain about being too busy, or lonely, or unappreciated. "Yes, there is hardship," he said; but a courageous priest accepts the difficulties that his vocation entails.
