Suspension soon for rebellious Brisbane priest?

May 01, 2009

Archbishop John Bathersby of Brisbane, Australia, may take disciplinary action against Father Peter Kennedy, the rebellious priest who has set up his own religious community to compete with the Catholic parish he once led in South Brisbane. The Sydney Morning Herald reports that the archbishop is likely to suspend Father Kennedy's faculties. Since the liturgical ceremonies at which Kennedy now leads are already illicit, and he regularly uses an invalid formula for baptism, the only major practical consequence of a suspension would be that the Church would no longer recognize marriages at which he presided. Kennedy says that if he is suspended by the Church he will seek civil authority to witness marriages.
