Cardinal Parolin: overcome the 'globalization of indifference'

January 19, 2016

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, spoke about overcoming the “globalization of indifference” in a January 19 presentation to the Global Foundation.

Cardinal Parolin said that Pope Francis has consistently called attention to “the grave consequences of indifference and of the lack of responsibility” in economic affairs. This indifference, he said, can be reflected in ignoring the needs of the poor and the demands of solidarity, or in disregard for environmental concerns.

“The right use of natural resources, the proper application of technology and the harnessing of the spirit of enterprise are essential elements of an economy which seeks to be modern, inclusive and sustainable,” the cardinal said. He encouraged “concrete steps and immediate measures for preserving and improving the natural environment and thus putting an end as quickly as possible to the phenomenon of social and economic exclusion.”
