Irish bishops: 100th anniversary of Easter Rising should stimulate work for peace

January 05, 2016

As Ireland prepares to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the “Easter Rising,” which paved the way for the nation’s independence, the country’s Catholic bishops have issued a statement calling for “a radical culture of peace.”

In their statement the bishops observe that the year 2016 also marks the 100th anniversary of the bloody Battle of the Somme. These anniversaries, they say, “have the potential to stimulate much-needed reflection on where we are as a society and what we want to achieve for the future.”
