Knights of Malta launch effort to help migrants in Aegean Sea

December 30, 2015

The Knights of Malta have announced a mission to help save migrants in the Aegean Sea.

An estimated 1 million migrants crossed the Aegean to reach Europe in 2015. The vast majority landed in Greece, with most setting sail from Turkey. The flood of migrants includes refugees from Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan.

Recognizing the dangers of the crossing—which is often attempted in overcrowded and inadequate vessels—the Italian branch of the Order of Malta has formed a partnership with the Greek coast guard to provide aid to the migrants.
