Cardinal Marx pays homage to president of European Parliament

May 13, 2015

Cardinal Reinhard Marx, speaking in his capacity as president of the Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Community (COMECE) has issued a statement congratulating Martin Schulz, the president of the European Parliament, who has been named this year’s recipient of the Charlemagne Prize.

Cardinal Marx said that Schulz has worked tirelessly to advance the European Union. “His conviction and experience enable him to inspire the younger generation, making them feel more involved in the European concept,” the German cardinal said.

In his homage to Schulz, the cardinal cited the words of the European politician, as he welcomed Pope Francis last November, when the Pontiff addressed the European Parliament. At the time, Schulz said that “the stance of the European Union and that of the Catholic Church to a large extent go hand in hand.”

“This commitment to strengthening democracy and citizens’ representation in the European Union makes him a worthy recipient of the Charlemagne Prize,” Cardinal Marx said. The Charlemagne Prize has awarded each year since 1950 to honor outstanding contributions to European unity and to world peace. Last year’s recipient was Herman Van Rompuy, the first President of the European Council.
