France still waiting on Vatican response to ambassador's nomination

April 14, 2015

The French government is still awaiting a Vatican response to the nomination of Laurent Stefanini as ambassador to the Holy See.

Stefanini’s nomination has been on hold for three months, and French media outlets have reported that Pope Francis chose to “freeze the dossier” because of reports that the proposed French ambassador is homosexual.

A spokesman for the French foreign ministry said that the government is still waiting for the Vatican’s response to the nomination, and added: “Laurent Stefanini has all the qualities necessary for this post.”

The Vatican has made no comment on the nomination. It is established practice in the diplomatic world that a country may decline to accept an ambassador’s nomination, with no explanation required.
