New York governor uncomfortable with lifting of statute of limitations
March 23, 2009
New York Governor David Paterson has expressed reservations about legislation that would lift the statute of limitations on clerical abuse cases for one year, potentially bankrupting the state’s dioceses. “These types of cases could go back, 20, 30, 40 years,” he said, “and since the evidence probably doesn't exist in any way to convict the perpetrator ... the accusation would hinder the career of any person who was accused.”
