Cardinal Pell moves into former office of Vatican bank president

December 05, 2014

Cardinal George Pell, the prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy, has moved into the office formerly occupied by the president of the Vatican bank, the Institute for Religious Works (IOR).

Cardinal Pell now presides over the Vatican's financial affairs, and his move into the IOR headquarters is important for symbolic reasons. The Australian cardinal is presiding over the streamlining of the Vatican bank, restricting its work to handling funds for Church agencies, dioceses, and religious orders.

The president's office had been used most recently by consultants brought in by the Vatican to scrutinize the operations of the bank. With their work now completed, the large office became vacant.
