Bishop Martino again chastises Senator Casey
February 27, 2009
For the second time in less than a month, Bishop Joseph Martino of Scranton, Pennsylvania, has rebuked the Senator Robert Casey for his vote against a proposal to extend the Mexico City policy, which barred US taxpayer financing for abortion advocacy in other countries. In an open letter to the Catholic lawmaker, the bishop charged that Casey's staff has "continually misrepresented" the vote as a move to promote family-planning programs. "The Mexico City Policy is, first and foremost, about abortion, not about family planning," Bishop Martino insisted.
