Syrian Catholics organize nation for Pope’s day of prayer for peace

September 02, 2013

All Catholic parishes in Syria are planning to join in the September 7 day of prayer for peace declared by Pope Francis, the leader of the Melkite Catholic Church reports.

Patriarch Gregory III Laham told the AsiaNews service that pilgrimages to Marian shrines are also planned, and the Melkite Catholic churches of Syria will remain open until midnight on Saturday, despite the threats of bombing. The Melkite leader welcomed the Pope’s “extraordinary gesture” and said that Melkites worldwide should join in the day of prayer.
