Benedict XVI celebrates 86th birthday

April 16, 2013

Pope-emeritus Benedict XVI celebrated his 86th birthday quietly on April 16 at Castel Gandolfo, accompanied by his older brother, Msgr. Georg Ratzinger.

As he celebrated Mass at the Domus Sanctae Marthae on Tuesday, Pope Francis reminded the congregation of his predecessor’s birthday, and said he was offering the Mass for Benedict. Later in the morning he placed a call to Castel Gandolfo to convey his birthday wishes personally.

Msgr. Ratzinger arrived at the papal summer residence last week to join his brother for his birthday. He is staying at Castel Gandolfo at least until April 23, the feast of his patron, St. George. Pope Francis—born Jorge Bergoglio—will be celebrating that same feast.
