Humanitarian crisis continues in Mali

February 08, 2013

Despite the recent departure of Islamic rebels from Timbuktu, “many tens of thousands of people” who have fled their homes since the northern Mali conflict began a year ago remain hesitant to return home, a Catholic Relief Services official told Vatican Radio.

“They don’t know when they will be going home,” Ann Schneible told Vatican Radio. “The military situation in the north is still ongoing. The displaced families that I’ve spoken to have basically said that they’re too scared to go home just yet. They want to be really sure that it’s safe up there, because what they saw, what they experienced was very traumatizing.”
