Texas: bishop acknowledges, laments sterilizations were done at Catholic hospitals
November 24, 2008
Bishop Alvaro Corrada of Tyler, Texas has acknowledged the accuracy of reports that Catholic hospitals in that state were allowing doctors to perform tubal ligations, rendering women sterile. After an investigation that he ordered in response to reports that hundreds of women had undergone the voluntary procedures at local Catholic institutions, Bishop Corrada released a statement saying "I have to admit my failure to provide adequate oversight of the Catholic hospitals as regards their protection of the sacred dignity of each human person." He promised that new policies would "bring an end to immoral practices" and ensure closer oversight at the hospitals.
