VICEGERENT
An auxiliary bishop appointed as assistant to the cardinal vicar of the diocese of Rome. He was a papal appointee with equal powers to the vicar in jurisdiction and in episcopal ceremonies. Pope Pius X (reigned 1902-14) declared the office suppressed as soon as it became vacant during his pontificate. (Etym. Latin vicis, in place of + gerens, acting.)
