A term used by the leaders of the Oxford Movement ot identify Anglicanism as the middle road between Popery (Catholicism) and dissent (Protestantism). Although popularized by John Henry Newman and other Tractarians, the expression is already found among seventeent-century English divines, e.g., George Herbert (1593-1633).
