SUPPORT OF RELIGION

The duty that a Catholic has to contribute to the support of the parish and other causes of religion, according to each one's means. It is an obligation more than once declared in the Scriptures (Deuteronomy 14:23: I Corinthians 9:14). Its object is that God may be duly honored and worshiped, and the kingdom of his Chruch extended.

Callistus was a Christian slave of Rome, and later was ordained deacon by Pope St. Zephyrinus, whom he succeeded as pope in the year 217. As deacon he was guardian of the Christian cemetery on the Appian Way which is still known by his name.…
