PSALTERY

Any collection of the Psalms of David as used in the Divine Office. There are two principal psalteries in liturgical history: the Roman, used at St. Peter's, and the Gallican, which is a later translation by St. Jerome. The Gallican was in common use until the complete revision of the Divine Office in 1970. A psaltery is also a stringed instrument resembling a harp, used with sacred chanting.
