PONTIFICAL MASTERS OF CEREMONIES

They originated in something of their present form under Pope Pius IV in 1563, and their privileges and duties were often revised. Their function is to direct the sacred ceremonies in the papal chapels and consistories. They are also in charge of the liturgy, by right or invitation, on other occasions, such as the consecration of churches, ordinations or formal visitations in and out of the city of Rome.
