PONTIFICAL COMMISSION FOR SACRED ART

Set up by Pope Pius XI in 1924, for the purpose of maintaining and fostering an appreciation of the Church's patrimony in art and architecture in Italy. In 1944 the commission was given the task of supervising the restoration of the churches and sacred edifices damaged during World War II. In 1967, Pope Paul VI published further directives for co-operation with diocesan liturgical commissions throughout Italy.
