HIRAM

A dynasty of kings in Tyre, a port near the present-day Beirut (I Kings 5:1). The best known of the Hirams was a close friend of both David and Solomon (II Samuel 5:11). He supplied them with carpenters and workmen and sent cedars and firs from Lebanese forests during the building of the Jerusalem Temple (I Chronicles 14:1). Only through Hiram's efficient co-operation was Solomon enabled to carry to completion his building program (I Kings 5:1-18). This trade alliance was made possible by the remarkable skill of the Tyrian sailors in their merchant ships (I Kings 9:11).
