ESTRANGEMENT

In general, alienating the affections of a person from someone. In theological terms, estrangement is the alienation of a sinner from God. It is caused by the deliberate commission of a sin, known to be grave, and results in the loss of the supernatural charity, and consequently the loss of sanctifying grace.
