ELVIRA, COUNCIL OF

National Council of Spain, held about A.D. 306 after a period of persecution. Among the eighty-one canons it passed are severe disciplinary penalties for apostasy and adultery. Celibacy of the clergy was legislated under pain of deposition (canon 33).
