AUGUSTINIANS

A general name for a number of religious institutes of men and women who base their way of life on the Rule of St. Augustine. Among the men are Augustinian canons, since the eleventh century; Augustinian hermits or friars, to whom Martin Luther had belonged; Augustinian recollects, or discalced hermits; and Augustinians of the Assumption, better known as Assumptionists. There are fourteen distinct communities of Augustinian religious institutes.
