I have a theory that might explain all the contradictions.
Maybe the Pope saw the movie, and said: "It is as lousy as the Anti-Defamation League told me it was."
But you know how movie publicists operate. So the quote ended up: "It is...as it was."
Just a theory. You got a better one?
