What the Condi Rice rumors tell pro-lifers

By Phil Lawler ( bio - articles - email ) | Jul 13, 2012

Condoleeza Rice? The rumors that Mitt Romney will pick the former Secretary of State as his running mate are cropping up too frequently to be coincidental. Something is afoot.

Let’s assume that the rumor has been floated as a trial balloon? What does it tell us, that after promising to select a pro-life running mate, Romney is now considering—or someone(s) in the Romney campaign wants us to think he is considering—a woman who describes herself as “mildly” pro-choice?

It tells us something that politically savvy pro-lifers realized long ago: Many Republicans take us for granted.

Let’s be honest. Hardball campaign operatives figure that pro-lifers will vote for Romney even if he betrays his promise to them, simply because they have no other viable choice. They will vote for Romney because he isn’t Barack Obama. They will vote for Romney because they have nowhere else to go.

For 30 years or more, Republican strategists have been making the same calculations. They court pro-life support in their fundraising campaigns and especially during the primary season. But as the general election nears, they edge away, confident that the pro-lifers will support them anyway.

And GOP candidates will keep taking pro-lifers for granted, until they are punished at the polls for doing so.

Attaboy, Phil! It's about time somebody starts asking questions like this--even though they should be obvious inquiries.

How many wolves in sheep's clothing do we have to sustain? He is corrupt and look at what he is in charge of. No wonder the stench from the Vatican get stronger by day. St. Michael please help us. Jesus please do something dramatic.

I hope that the Pope reads your column and takes your advice. O, I forgot, being a cronie trumps the FACTS!

I am firmly in the pro-life camp, but if Romney picks Rise as VP I will not vote for him. Let Obama win, in that case - it will bring a persecution on the Church, to be sure, and a form of totalitarianism we've never seen in this country, but this too surely has its purpose in God's plan. Persecution of the Church will bear positive fruit, as it always has. Lukewarm and quisling Catholics will have to choose: God or Caesar. Such choices can be clarifying.

So we'll just "punish" Romney by shooting ourselves in the head? Don't think that sounds like a very good idea.

Condoleeza Rice is a gifted individual but, I agree, her position on several major issues means we cannot champion her as a potential vice-presidental candidate. I wish her well, and pray that the Lord lead her towards supporting life. -- One thing is well known. Pro-Life candidates can and do win.

I for one have no intention of punishing the GOP by re-electing Barack Obama and the All Stars. I will be praying for Condi Rice's conversion just because she needs it. I know that George Bush 43 dumped on the Pro Life movement also. It's awful, but we are not going to win this battle because of men, but in spite of them.
