What All Parents Should Want for Their Children

So perhaps it was providential that this morning, as I picked a bible off the bookshelf to study a passage in Matthew’s Gospel, my hand slipped and the bible flopped open to the inside of the front cover. There I found an inscription written by my parents twenty-three years ago, when they gave the bible to me as a gift. Here I share that inscription:
For Peter on the day of his Confirmation:
Today you have received the tremendous gift of the Holy Spirit—the gift which perfects baptism and confirms you in your likeness to Christ.
The only limit on the power of these graces in your life will be your own willing effort to use the strength that is now yours in Christ for the greater glory of God.
May you love God above all things, and bear witness to His Truth your whole life long—this is our prayer for you.

Well, Mom and Dad: after all these years, I think I’m finally starting to really get it. Thanks for being patient! I will certainly pass this prayer along to my own children, and I hope every parent does likewise.
