Wanted: GOP backbone

What's astonishing about the controversy swirling around Sen. Rick Santorum is that no other nationally prominent Republican leader has come to Santorum's defense.
Here's what Santorum said, roughly: If the government doesn't put legal restrictions on consenual sex acts, that means the government doesn put any legal restrictions on consensual sex acts. Can anyone argue with that?
But the gay-rights lobby can't and won't allow a prominent lawmaker to suggest that homosexual acts are unnatural or immoral. So they're painting Santorum as a bigot. That's understandable. What's not so understandable is that Santorum's GOP allies are watching from the sidelines.
