Something is very wrong in an Argentine diocese

By Phil Lawler ( bio - articles - email ) | May 28, 2024

“What on earth is happening in the Diocese of Mar del Plata, Argentina?” I asked back in January.

Yesterday a young (55) Argentine archbishop resigned, less than a year after his installation, explaining that Pope Francis had asked him to step down because of “what happened in the Diocese of Mar del Plata”—where he had been bishop from 2017 to 2023.

The man appointed to replace him resigned before he was installed as bishop. Another bishop was named—and he too resigned before installation! No explanation yet from Rome. Something very strange—and definitely not good—is happening there.
