Reflections on Genesis 3:5

I went to confession in ‘52;
the priest asked, “What’s the matter with you?
Catholics know that God above
forbids the divorce of life and love.”

I went to confession in ’69,
not for contraception at the time.
The Church had recently dashed our hope;
better then to ignore the Pope.

I went to confession in twenty 16
(since Church authority was not being mean).
“If it’s the best you can do within your heart,
then it’s what God wants,” the Pope remarked.

But I’ll confess no more in a year or two
since “intrinsically evil” isn’t true.
They were right in the 60s as it turns out:
Chiodi has proved it beyond all doubt.

My responsibility makes things good or bad.
So I’ll be like God—as someone said.
