Quick-response capacity

On Wednesday a group of 160 Milwaukee priests called for an end to mandatory clerical celibacy. On Thursday the president of the US bishops' conference called for "honest conversation" on the issue.
If a group of 160 priests called for a return to the Tridentine-rite Mass, do you suppose they'd get the same sort of quick and sympathetic response? How about if a group of 16,000 laymen called for the public excommunication of pro-abortion politicians?
