In a "must read" essay for Opinion Journal, Rocco Buttiglione argues that there's a crucial difference between American and European politics: the European political climate is actively hostile to religious faith.
Buttiglione knows whereof he speaks, having just been rejected as a nominee for the European Commission because he professes Catholic beliefs.
Here's hoping that his important message is read carefully at the Vatican, where many prelates-- including his personal friends-- still manifest a puzzling enthusiasm for the European Union.
