More Religious Liberty Initiatives

By Dr. Jeff Mirus ( bio - articles - email ) | Jun 28, 2012

Today’s Supreme Court ruling suggests we have a long fight ahead of us on not only religious liberty but on liberty in general. The Court upheld the health insurance mandate which lies at the core of Obamacare, justifying it under the power of the Congress to levy taxes.

So it is just as well that the effort is continuing. Two more significant initiatives have come to my attention, providing more evidence of a willingness to act on the US bishops’ call to defend religious liberty, to foster a deeper commitment to Christian life, and to emphasize the importance of religious faith to the common good:

  • First They Came for the Catholics: This is a tellingly-entitled new film, the first project of Promise Productions. The film explores Catholic teaching on marriage and sexuality, giving the “backstory” on the Church’s opposition to contraception, and setting the stage for an understanding of current concerns about religious liberty.
  • Fellowship of Catholic Scholars: The theme for the 35th annual convention of the Fellowship of Catholic Scholars will be Religious Liberty. The Fellowship consists of a broad range of American scholars who are faithful to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church. Their convention will be held in Washington, DC, September 28-30, 2012.
