The missing link

A Massachusetts priest has been suspended. A young man has been murdered. What's the connection? That's what I'd like to know.
Here's the story. Now, what's missing?
If I were the AP editor, I might have encouraged the reporter to provide a little more explanation of why, if A is suspected of killing B, the bishops responds by suspending C. I might ask the reporter to describe the relationship between A and C.
Oh, wait! The reporter did describe that relationship. My mistake!
Now I have just a little question about style. Why are the words "good friends" in quotes?
